Hey guys! Cajun here, and it’s time once again to look back at the lucky year that was 2013, and check out the best of the best in the world of anime! If you recall, in Winter 2013 Good Job Club [GJ-Bu]picked up honors with “Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet” cleaning up in the Spring. Now it’s time to see what got our temperatures rising with the Best Anime of 2013 in the Summer!
[Disclaimer: Please note that these are simply my picks for what was awesome this past year. The choices I make for better or worse, may or may not follow mainstream line of thinking, so please don’t think it a snub if you don’t see your favorite “thing” mentioned in this look-back! These are just our own opinions. Cool? Cool.]
Best Overall Anime of Summer 2013: Silver Spoon [Gin no Saji]
Who would’ve thought this simple anime about a city boy living the farm life would have so much heart and tell such a warm and inviting story? This show follows our fish-out-of-water character Hachiken, and his farm-savvy friends as they attend Ozeo Agricultural High School, which requires the student body take part in both standard school courses and practical courses involving agriculture. Over time, Hachiken comes to learn more than just how to feed cows and chickens, but about how to interact with others and build relationships with people of varying personalities. It’s these skills and these encounters that help develop his personality. This anime was about as enjoyable as enjoyable gets for me, and when I heard that it was, in fact, getting a second season, many happy tears were shed…yes indeed….
Runner Up: Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
Even I can’t deny the frenzy that Free! stirred up when it was announced, and thus the reason why I mentioned it here. Though I completely and utterly scorched it in a review I wrote up for Sofa King News [Which is STILL garnishing at least one flame comment a day…], and I still believe that this show is awful, I have to admit that Free! was the show that everybody and their grandmother was talking about and fawning over. Fangirls cheered loudly around the anime community and bragged on message boards and forums that this show was “their turn” at having a fanservice anime [conveniently ignoring the fact that there have been quite a few other anime out there geared toward female audiences…], and drooled at the sight of rippling pecks, abs, delts, and everything else that the creators could animate. Add to that an ending title sequence that…ugh…not going there. In any case, the fangirls [and a few fanboys…I have several on my Facebook friends list…crying shame…] ate it up and guaranteed it would get a 2nd season. As for me? Like I said before:
…I can honestly say that Free! is just a gimmick anime with nothing much going for it beyond that. It’s pretty much a boy’s version of K-On! except with swimmers instead of band members.
Alright! And that’s Summer 2013 done and over with! Last but not least on the docket–we’re going to look at the season that actually just wrapped up–Fall 2013!
