A Tag-Team Review of “Seitokai Yakuindomo”: Part I – Girls Talk About WHAT?!?!

Cajun Samurai – Hey everyone, Cajun Samurai here!

Otaku Andrain – OSU! I’m Otaku Andrain.

Cajun Samurai – Man, it’s been a while since we did a review together, huh? I figured that since this was Gag Anime month, and many Japanese comedians work in pairs, it would work for us!

Otaku Andrain – As long as you don’t mind me being the straight man. You’ve seen a lot of Manzai?

[Manzai is a form of Japanese Stand-up comedy that features two comedians: a straight man, tsukkomi, and a funny man, boke trading jokes back and forward with each other based on mutual misunderstandings, puns and other play on words…]

Cajun Samurai – Admittedly, no. Got to work on that.

Otaku Andrain – Oy… well whatever Japanese comedy is kind of weird for foreigners anyway; let’s not go too far.

Cajun Samurai – Right, right…”Super Milk-Chan” still has me scratching my head. In any case! We’re going to be looking at a show that, if memory serves, you introduced me to a few years ago.

Otaku Andrain – That’s right a 4-koma comedic treat that’s nothing like it should appear.

Cajun Samurai – Right. Of course, we’re talking about “Seitokai Yakuindomo” or “SYD” for short because we’re too lazy.

Warnings and Other Objectionable Content –

Otaku Andrain – First the warnings, I rate this series “R” because there’s a lot of… uncouth statements made in this anime. I didn’t say it was a hentai but it’s also not for kids.

Cajun Samurai – You can say that again. While on the outside this show looks like your typical high-school comedy series like “Nichijou” or “Danshi Kokousei no Nichijou”, the dialogue is ABSOLUTELY NOT for anyone below the age of 15. This is a case of “Nothing Seen, but Heavily implied.”

Neg—just kidding. But it’s about as rare as hen’s teeth, guys. Amazon has it, as does Play Asia and, of course, eBay. Once again, please be careful about buying physical media online.

If you search around, you might find it streaming on other sites, but you’ll have to look far, wide, near and far. Again, be careful what sites you stream from. (Andrain suggests Otaku-streamers.net)

Series Premise –

Otaku Andrain – So what do we got here? Our story follows Takatoshi Tsuda-kun, a First year high school student that applied to Osai Academy. Osai is an all-girl school that went co-ed this year… Oy! What’s wrong with you! Tsuda is upright and decent guy!

Cajun Samurai – After a run-in with the Student Council President, Amakusa Shino-san, he is all but forced to join the Student Council as its Vice President and a representative of the male population of the school.

Otaku Andrain – … Yes, she’s cute? NO, HE DOESN’T HAVE NORMAL BOY FANTASIES ABOUT HER! What do you mean we say this is a very Ecchi anime?! Stop being so sexist!

Cajun Samurai – Indeed, the Ecchi aspect of the story comes from the female cast!

Otaku Andrain – … Stop looking at us like that! Girls can be pervy too.

Cajun Samurai – Indeed. I know this all too well. For 2 years, I worked on an all-female team at work. It’s amazing the conversations I have been privy to. They pretty much discuss in and everything that CAN be discussed with unabashed abandon.

Otaku Andrain – In any case surprisingly, our lone male MC who is in a harem setting by all technicality is reduced to the role of comedy straight man.

Cajun Samurai – A role that he assumes somewhat reluctantly as there are moments when one of our Female leads says something COMPLETELY out in left field that it takes him by surprise.

Cajun Samurai – …something I can attest to.

Otaku Andrain – Anyway, it’s a crazy slightly messed up school and Tsuda-kun has all these crazy women around him. It was a REALLY refreshing experience my first time through.

Cajun Samurai – Right! This show is pretty unique in its execution and it is a great departure from the norm. We’re so used to seeing these pure maidens at the receiving end of the grungy talk. So to have a group of females dish out the potty talk like this is refreshing indeed. Admittedly though, for the uninitiated, it might be a little much…

Otaku Andrain – As for the story premise though I got to give 11.5/12.5

Cajun Samurai – I’m gonna go with an 11/12.5. I’m only taking the full point because there are times when the jokes get a little too predictable, but that aside, it’s a hilarious story premise.

Cajun Samurai Score – 11.5/12.5
Otaku Andrain Score – 11/12.5

Favorite Scene/Episode –

Otaku Andrain – Boss, I can’t do it… I just can’t… It’s… just not possible.

Cajun Samurai – ::pats on shoulder:: I know, I know. I had a very hard time myself. It’s cool. I have one in mind that I’m actually watching right now and laughing at all over again… Recall if you will when Tsuda encounters a gaijin in the street. He’s completely oblivious as to how to answer him.

Otaku Andrain – ‘eh wasn’t the best, but that was a good moment; Suzu-Chan to the rescue.

Cajun Samurai – Indeed…except when you call her “small”, which we will get into later. In any case, my second favorite scene out of many has GOT to be the Ichigo 100 Parody in episode 8…

Characters –

Otaku Andrain – Shall we talk about our lovely cast?

Cajun Samurai – Of course. Let’s start off with our male lead, Takatoshi Tsuda! By far the most normal character in this whole show.

The Main Female Cast of "Seitokai Yakuindomo"...and the three ecchiest characters of the 2010 series...Otaku Andrain – Why did he want to go to this school specifically? Why it was closest to his house of course! He’s a no nonsense clever type of guy.

Cajun Samurai – Can’t say I blame him. But little does he know what he’s getting himself into by attending a school that was previously all-girls.

Otaku Andrain – and singled out as Vice president while in his first year.

Cajun Samurai – Not a bad choice at all. He’s a stand-up guy and he can act as the voice of the male minority. ::looks to camera:: You see that, Strawberry Eggs?! This is how you treat your male student minority!!

Otaku Andrain – Moving on, next we have the charismatic Seito-kaichou Amakusa Shino.

Cajun Samurai – She’s a firm yet fair leader who takes her duties seriously…when she doesn’t have sex on the brain.

Otaku Andrain – Which is all the time…

Cajun Samurai – …this girl seriously will take the most inert of sentences and find a way to turn it into some sort of innuendo…and she’ll do it WITH A STRAIGHT FACE.

Otaku Andrain – At least she honestly says what he’s thinking?

Cajun Samurai – Honesty is one thing, but DANG…

Otaku Andrain – I still love her though! She’s a great heroine.

Shichijo Aria -- Don't let the smile fool you...she's one of the biggest perverts in the show...seriously! Cajun Samurai – Moving on down the line, we have Shichijo Aria. She’s the Student Council Secretary and…Well…

Otaku Andrain – Just as bad if not worse than Shino

Cajun Samurai – Indeed. It’s EXTREMELY had to say who is worse–her or Shino. Aria is supposed to be our older sister character like Alicia Florence from “Aria”, and in fact, she has quite a few of Snow White’s vocal traits…

Otaku Andrain – Don’t forget the rich girl too, but… well it’s hard to sum up who she is other than Shino’s Combo maker… the two of them do enjoy going on the worst tangents together.

Cajun Samurai – Shino sets things up, and Aria goes in for the perverse snipe. The perfect right-hand woman.

Otaku Andrain – One of those types where it’s better to look rather than listen to…

Cajun Samurai – Indeed…there is no topic of discussion outside her range. And she says it so sweetly and politely…

Hagimura Suzu - Don't Call her A Loli...okay, she's a loli...Otaku Andrain – Finally! We have the treasurer Hagimura Suzu, the resident genius.

Cajun Samurai – With a Napoleon complex out of this world.

Otaku Andrain – Hey to be fair, she’s a first year like Tsuda-kun and is sane.

Cajun Samurai – Sane? You call completely snapping on a foreigner for calling her a “little girl” sane?

Otaku Andrain – She’s pure then?

Cajun Samurai – Better! She’s nowhere near as perverse as her sempais, and she shares the role of straight man with Tsuda, even replacing him for one episode when he’s out with a cold.

Otaku Andrain – Suzu apparently has a 180 IQ which she’s proud to mentions often but she and Tsuda are a team (Doesn’t mean romantic team) Just a team.

Cajun Samurai – She uses her IQ to compensate for her lack of height…or lack of anything else for that matter.

Otaku Andrain – That’s our main cast! Can it get any crazier Samurai-san?

Cajun Samurai – Tsuda’s Imoudo–Oy! Quit being so formal! ::chops head::

Otaku Andrain – Ow! This wasn’t a slapstick moment, Baka!

Cajun Samurai – Gomen-ne! Couldn’t help myself. In any case, we have got to mention Tsuda’s Imoudo…a Shino-in-Training.

Otaku Andrain – Tsuda Kotomi is an adorable young girl. I mean she’s reached Shino level in many ways and she may or may not be a bro-con

Cajun Samurai – Yeah, I picked up on that…she does seem to love her big brother. But you got to feel for Tsuda-kun, though…he doesn’t get any kind of relief from the Ecchi antics at school.

Otaku Andrain – Yes he does, his classmate Mutsumi Mitsuba generally known by everyone as “Judo girl”

Cajun Samurai – Oh yeah! I forgot about her! Bless her heart, she’s so pure…
And her purity quite literally blinds those around her.

Otaku Andrain – Well most of them, it’s probably reasonable to mention Hata-san

Cajun Samurai – Ah yes, our Pervy-Paparazzi.

Otaku Andrain – The enemy to every Student Council everywhere! The Press!

Cajun Samurai – How she moves that fast with that DSLR Camera is beyond me, but she manages…and I have to give her props!

Otaku Andrain – So how would you rate our characters?

Cajun Samurai – If this were any other anime, I would burn it severely…but as this is a gag anime, they all are perfect for the environment. I had no problems! [12.5/12.5]

Otaku Andrain – I agree this wonderful cast is perfect for an anime like this, I have nothing to say on the negative end. [12.5/12.5]

Cajun Samurai Score – 12.5/12.5
Otaku Andrain Score – 12.5/12.5

[That’s the end of Part 1! Sorry for the delay guys, but you know, with all the crap that’s been going on over the course of the last week added to my own work duties…yeah…things kinda fell behind a bit! But don’t worry! Part 2 of our review won’t take that long! Later!]
