Hey guys, Samurai here! I just had to share a few things that came across my desk over the course of the last few weeks with relation to “Neon Genesis Evangelion”; or, to be more precise, the new “Rebuild of Evangelion” movie. As we all know, the third in the quartet of “Rebuild of Evangelion” movies, “Evangelion 3.0 Q You Can (Not) Redo”, will be hitting theaters in a little less than a month now, and already, the promotions and marketing teams for this movie have been finding new and unique ways to get fans like us to go and see the movie–multiple times, if you please. To that end, some special “Evangelion” products related to the movie in some way have been released in Japan and, well, some of them are rather…unique shall we say? Let’s take a look.
Evangelion Water Cooler – This one I just read about from Anime News Network. Apparently a company known as Aqua Clara will be releasing, as part of a special “Human Water Instrumentality Project” [Because, if an earlier Evangelion movie is to be believed, the standard Instrumentality Project didn’t work out…], four special water coolers with “decorative Evangelion-themed” panels. One can pick between having Rei solo, all four of our pilots [Rei, Shinji, Mari, Asuka and Kaworu], Evangelion Unit-01 or the NERV logo along with the infamous phrase “God’s in his heaven, all is right with the world” along the front of the cooler. Aqua Clara reports that the coolers could be purchased for either $105 or rented for $20 a month which includes refills and maintenance. The coolers come complete with a digital clock [in the styling of the infamous Eva Countdown clock], an anti-bacterial UV Lamp to purify the water, a reverse osmosis (RO) water filter, and a water heating function for tea. Honestly, this is a pretty decent deal; $20 bucks for maintenance and refills AND a stylish cooler tank as well? Heck, Kentwood Springs here in Louisiana wants $25 a month and even then, I don’t get a cooler that includes a bio-android containing a damned soul inside it. Believe me, I called and asked…and was told never to call again. Darn.
Evangelion Eye Wear – Okay, so pop quiz. How many characters in “Neon Genesis Evangelion” wore glasses? Seriously. Let’s see how good you are. Give up? Highlight inside the brackets for the answer. [Gendo, Ritsuko, Kensuke, and Mari] However, if this advertisement is to be believed, then our whole group of pilots are glasses wearing hipsters. Anime News Network reports that the glasses designer JINS, who has already designed glasses based off the anime “Tiger and Bunny” will be producing glasses inspired by “Neon Genesis Evangelion”. The most recent addition to the Evangelion lineup, Eva-99 Gendo Model, will be selling for about $63 bucks in US Currency. The glasses will include a special case with the NERV logo on the lid, and a matching NERV cleaning cloth. Now…ahem…As a glasses wearing boy, I find this story particularly interesting… However, the Gendo glasses are WAY different from the specks he wears in the show and in the movies. And as for the other styles as modeled by the Eva pilots…meh…they look like the cast from a Japanese version of “Friends”. And how in the heck do you NOT update poor Kensuke Aida’s glasses?! I mean, granted, he’s not a pilot, but he’s our only true glasses-boy in “Evangelion” and he’s gotten the short end of the stick in both the original series and the reboot movies!
Evangelion Eye Drops – This has to be one of my personal favorite Evangelion Tie-In Products so far, and it’s another eye-related one. Created by Santen, the “Sante FX Eye Drops” are designed for people with “tired eyes/red eyes”. [Ironic when you consider that several members of the Evangelion cast have red eyes…] The container for the drops are designed to resemble the coloring of the Evangelion Units, depending on which pilot box the consumer uses: Rei, Shinji, Asuka or Kaworu. [Sorry Mari fans, it looks as though she doesn’t get to take part in the eye-drop action] If the idea of having your favorite Evangelion characters hocking eye drops promising a “Refreshing Feeling” isn’t enough, how about a series of commercials featuring Rei, Mari and Asuka in skimpy cosplay, showing the now drooling fans how to properly apply the drops in their eye. [It should be noticed that Asuka is the only one who actually reads the instructions…somehow this seems out of character.] Now…I only have one major issue with this whole promotion…and it’s the same issue that I had two years ago when I heard about the “One Piece” shaving promotional. To wit: do you REALLY want to buy shaving products from a guy who has a scar on his cheek? With regards to Evangelion…do I REALLY want to purchase eye drops when the people endorsing them, namely Rei and Asuka, wear EYE PATCHES at one time or another during the series? I’m not hatin’, I’m just sayin’…
