“New school, new apartment, but the same old lumpy oatmeal.”
—Takeru “TK” Takashi First Words of the New Season.
[Hey guys! Just a few things I wanted to explain before we get started–first and foremost, this is going to be a LONG review; probably one of the longest reviews we EVER do! Because of certain… circumstances surrounding “Digimon Adventure 02” story, we thought it would be a good idea to be as detailed as possible and explain our position on certain things to detail. Also, due to some scheduling issues, this is only going to be a Tag-Team review instead of a Tri-Team review as Lord Patamon was unable to join us when we had to go to “print”. However, we REALLY appreciate his views on our “Digimon Adventure 01” review, and we look forward to working with him again! So with all that being said, here’s our comprehensive review of “Digimon Adventure 02”!]
Cajun Samurai – Hey everyone! I’m Cajun Samurai.
Cajun Samurai – What are you working on man?
OtakuAndrain – Oh hanging with some old friends, Reaching out to the Truth, and Burning my Dread.
Cajun Samurai – Oy! The landlord said no dread burning until after dusk! In any case, continuing on with our look at the Digimon franchise, we’re going to be taking a look at the sequel to “Digimon Adventure”, appropriately titled “Digimon Adventure 02”.
OtakuAndrain – I don’t think I can comply… [::stabs a Daikatana (Oy! That’s only a Two Handed Katana gezzz… now I got another thing to get into!) into the ground and just stares forward::] I’m gonna have to burn something.
Cajun Samurai – What has you so riled up?
OtakuAndrain – This DUB…The Original by itself was bad, but this Dub is a crowning achievement of failure.
Cajun Samurai – Yes…[::clears throat and a mysterious long handled axe staff with dark etchings appears next to him::] Well, that being said, “Digimon Adventure 02” kind of suffers from the sequel syndrome in that the second and summary seasons of a popular show tend to be noticeably weaker than it’s predecessor. That being said, “Digimon Adventure 02” does have its strong points, few though they may be. All we can do is just pick apart what we love, what we hate, and what needs to burn in the fiery flames of the Underworld for all eternity…. [::mutters:: noodle cart driver… ::Clears throat::]
OtakuAndrain – THAT’S THE WORST YOU GOT?! Oh boy… Buckle up folks. This is gonna be a LONG day.
Cajun Samurai – Much like its predecessor, “Digimon Adventure 02” is a kid’s show through and through.
OtakuAndrain – But I’m about to ruin your childhood. Stand By…
OtakuAndrain – Internet?
Cajun Samurai – Pretty much… Unlike its predecessor [You’ll hear me say that a LOT really, because this show is REALLY not like “Digimon Adventure 01”] there isn’t that much of a calling for this one. It is available in its unedited format on CrunchyRoll and some other streaming sites as well.
OtakuAndrain – There you have it.
Cajun Samurai – Okay, sadly “Hey Digimon” doesn’t really apply to this season as it did last time so we’ll have to explain it properly.
Cajun Samurai – I ask that you remember this dear viewer–MIDDLE SCHOOL. You’ll see what I mean later. When the series starts, the Digital World is trembling under the reign of the Digimon Emperor…err…Kaiser…who is hell-bent on taking over the digital world with Dark
OtakuAndrain – He’s a Super genius who sees this all as a release of all the stress he’s under. Frankly I don’t blame him. He sees pointless little pieces of data and is making a game out of it. Of course he’s not clued in that they have hearts and souls so he’s looking totally evil right now.
Cajun Samurai – Of course, like all mid-level baddies [Think Astronima from “Power Rangers in Space”] he’s simply being controlled by both the tragedies of his past and an outside force from the Digital World itself.
OtakuAndrain – In any case lamest power down EVER occurs…
Cajun Samurai – And we’re introduced to the “Real” enemy of the Digital World…
OtakuAndrain – No, Lamest power DOWN you know how Gato/Tailmon loses her Tail ring and becomes as strong as a crummy Rookie/Child even if she’s a Champion/Adult.
Cajun Samurai – Oh yeah. I recall that–seeing as how I got the episode playing now. Heh…
OtakuAndrain – IN ANY CASE! So in comes three newbies heading the call of Destiny: Daisuke “Davis” Motomiya, Miyako “Yolei” Inoue, and Iori “Cody” Hida.
Cajun Samurai – And together, with our tested Chosen Children TK and Kari, the basis of our new group is formed…for better or worse.
OtakuAndrain – Hmmm what’s that? What’s Stopping Tai and Matt from fixing all this with WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon? Excellent Question! You see Our Friend the Kaiser put up these… CONTROL SPIRES all over the bleeping place… honestly, the guy does NOT need additional pylons, but they apparently interfere with the old forms of Digi-Volution.
Cajun Samurai – On a silly note, do you think that making the Control Spires look like the Washington Monument was made as being a Jab to the US?
OtakuAndrain – I doubt it… It was just an efficient design to totally spam… ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Cajun Samurai – Heh…. Just had to mention it… In any case, because the old Digi-Volution methods are nulled out, a new method of evolving is introduced called Armor Digi-Volving.
OtakuAndrain – Or Digi-mentals in the case of the original… So, yeah… They’re modeled after the Old crests from before.
Cajun Samurai – If you could equate it with anything, recall Season 02 of Power Rangers… – The Americanized version. The Dino-Zords were reconfigured into the Thunderzords, but the basis for their power was based off the outgoing mechas. Hence the Red Rangers’ zord is now the “Tyrannosaurus Red Dragon Thunderzord”, and it is shown as transforming as such with the Thunder powers.
OtakuAndrain – Of course legendary Digimon popped out of the first three they found; Veemon, Hawkmon, and Armadillomon. Veemon being the rookie/child form of the Digimon hero from the Manga “V-Tamers” known as Veedramon.
Cajun Samurai – I didn’t know that…
OtakuAndrain – “V-tamers” was an awesome series that took place in an alternate universe that featured pretty much only Taichi Yagami [Kamiya] and his partner Veedramon.
Cajun Samurai – Oh yeah…it seems like I remember hearing about that a while back on the internet somewhere in that Tai was out on his own. In any case! The storytelling of this series is noticeably different than its predecessor in that instead of being trapped in the Digital World with no way home, the Digi-Team can now traverse the Digital Divide with ease. I thought this was unique, but it took something away from the series…
OtakuAndrain – Yeah and there was that terrible excuse of aligning the Digital World and human world time frames in such an annoying way… Everything was just pulled back in this series.
Cajun Samurai – Yeah… “01” gave the characters problems to try and solve–how to deal with being in a foreign environment, how to survive and live with others…this season, a lot is GIVEN to the new Digi-Destined without there being much effort; the new Digi-vices, the new evolution process, heck, the team is even given new clothes when traversing from the Real world to the Digital World.
