Breaking News Update: “Toonami” Releases New Schedule

Okay guys, another big announcement in the ongoing “Toonami Returns” story arc. Just a few hours ago, Jason DeMarco, VP of Strategic Marketing and Promotions for Cartoon Network, confirmed, via Anime News Network and his Twitter page, the shows and the schedule that will be in effect for “Toonami’s” return to the airwaves on Saturday, May 27th:

12:00 a.m. – Bleach
12:30 a.m. – Deadman Wonderland
1:00 a.m. – Casshern Sins
1:30 a.m. – Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
2:00 a.m. – Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG
2:30 a.m. – Cowboy Bebop

Now, I know what you’re probably thinking; “Where is DragonBall Z? Where is Gundam? Where is Outlaw Star?” The answer is relatively simple; they can’t afford the rights. “Toonami” is returning with a seriously truncated budget, because this is, for all intents and purposes, an “Experiment” [as quoted by Jason DeMarco]. This is a trial to see if the “Toonami” brand can bring in solid enough numbers that would warrant throwing more cash into the project, thereby allowing more shows to be licensed for TV. So, at least for the time being, don’t look for any classic titles on the lineup. Also, while it is confirmed that Tom [Version 3] will return in high-definition aboard a “slightly different but almost identical” starship, the Absolution, and that Steven Blum will return as the voice of Tom, his co-host and ship AI Sara will not appear due to budgetary reasons.

So there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. “Toonami” returns, but not QUITE as we know it. But, you never know; this could be the beginnings of “Toonami” returning to its former glory. A wise person once said that “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Let’s hope that this step isn’t off the proverbial cliff…

  1. Not completely unexpected but I understand they have no real cash to work with. Let’s all see how it goes.

  2. Hey, I’ll take truncated Toonami over no Toonami. I just wish they had it in the prime time slot. Toonami was supposed to be for the kiddies so they could get their feet wet and then “graduate” to Adult Swim.

  3. Now that was an interesting hour. I think both myself and the Samurai have a lot to say about the two new Anime

  4. Indeed. While “Bleach”, “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood”, “GITS: SAC” and “Cowboy Bebop” preformed as per usual, “Deadman Wonderland” and “Casshern Sins” provided…interesting…moments. Something we will get into a little later on.
