Well, will you look at that! In about a week from now, 2011 will be but a distant memory and 2012 will be upon us! I was thinking it would be nice if, for the rest of the year, I would take a look back at some of my favorite things in the world of anime from the past year! Let’s have a look at the fairer sex with the best female character of 2011!
Best Female Anime Character of 2011: Mari Illustrious Makinami from “Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance”
One look at this little firecrackers name and you already know she’s something special. Mari has to be one of the most refreshing characters to grace the “Neon Genesis Evangelion” franchise since Asuka Langley Soryu (Shikinami). From her introduction in the series astride the Provisional Evangelion Unit-05, we know that Mari is not like the other pilots we’ve seen up to that point. She has an almost manic desire to pilot the Evangelion [ANY Evangelion, really…] simply because she loves to do it. She loves every aspect of piloting, and, even when she’s in the fits of pain in battle, she finds some strange, almost masochistic pleasure in it. Not to mention the fact that she’s obviously very intelligent [speaking better English than Kaji…] and a committed pilot, willing to win no matter what the risk. Also, the fact that she’s the first glasses-girl in the Evangelion franchise is always a plus in my book. [And before you get riled up, I do not count Ritsuko as a glasses-girl because A: she’s not a “Girl”, she’s a woman, and B: she doesn’t wear her glasses all the time like Mari]. So take a bow, Mari. You are truly the most Illustrious female character of this year!
