Well, will you look at that! In about a week from now, 2011 will be but a distant memory and 2012 will be upon us! I was thinking it would be nice if, for the rest of the year, I would take a look back at some of my favorite things in the world of anime from the past year! Because we here at “The Cajun Samurai” believe in gender equality, we now present to you the best Female Voice Actress of 2011 in both Japanese and in English!
If you ever need an actress to play a “big sister” or “gentle soul” character, look no farther than Sayaka Ohara. Even though she’s voiced many other great characters like Kimura-sensei’s “waifu” in “Azumanga Daioh”, shop owner Yuko Ichihara in “xxxHolic” and the goddess-like Alicia Florence in the “Aria” series, it was her portrayal of single mother Yukari Nitani in “Usagi Drop” that won me over this year. She sounds truly believeable in the role, and I love the emotion that she brought to the table.
Best Female Voice Actress (English): Maxey Whitehead
It takes a lot of guts to step into a role already established by another actor or actress. It takes downright cajones if that character is male and you just so happen to be female. Maxey Whitehead has both. Her portrayal of Alphone Elric in “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” was simply awesome. Not only did she reach the level of the original actor, Aaron Dismuke [who could not return to the role due to a little thing called “puberty” but he is still around in other Funimation works…], but she took her performance to the NEXT level and made Alphonse sound even better than before. Not only that…but we actually have the SAME birthday! Gemini in the house!
